spring checklist

{photo}
1. Discover polish colors for the season other than the classic pastels.
2. Plant some herb seeds to zest up my summer meals.
3. Wear more skirts and dresses.
4. Maintain my winter skin routine, it may seem unneccessary but I'll benefit in the long run.
5. Make the ultimate spring cleaning checklist.
6. Figure out ways to keep everything clean.
7. Start making sweet tea earlier than summer.
8. Go for more walks to enjoy the weather.
9. Try and embrace sunny yellow, even with my blonde hair.
10. Don't get prematurely excited for summer.

love your food: grilled cheese

{Bouchon Bakery's amazing grilled cheese}

Though I've been eating gluten-free for a while now, I still appreciate a good grilled cheese. (With strange gf bread, which I actually don't mind that much).
But for those of you with a typical diet, here are my tips for a classic grilled cheese.

1. Favorite Cheese- My all-the-time, go-to cheese is sharp cheddar. Not the orange stuff, but the nice, yummy white kind. I typically use Cabot's and it makes for a nice, strong-flavored sandwich.

2. Use several cheeses- Mixing cheeses or even using a single, more unusual cheese makes for a flavorful sandwich. Mozzarella is fun as a stand-alone, but adding a touch of pecorino to cheddar is also great.

3. Herbs- If I'm yearning for a change in my favorite lunch, I'll add something special. I usually sprinkle salt and pepper for a bit of zest. If you're in a spicy mood, throw some red pepper flakes in between your top slice of bread and cheese. My favorite thing to do is place small leaves of fresh basil in my grilled cheese.

week of 2.23.14

Happy Socks- The constant cold weather causes a bit of a Bean Boot and wool socks rut. These socks bring a little shine to the dear days.

Saint Laurent bag- I'm in search of a perfect new purse! This is similar to what I want, preferably with the same great quality but maybe a lower price tag.

Emily's Monday style- Love this laid-back but put-together look from Cupcake and Cashmere author.

Clinique High Lengths Mascara-When I first tried this out, I thought the wand was extremely strange. Once I gave it a shot, this is a new staple in my makeup routine. It gives incredibly length without clumping

Lush Bubblegum Lip Scrub- Not only does this lip scrub smell and taste incredible, but it also does it's job. Just spread a bit on for super smooth lips.

Caramelized Salmon- Typically, my family just makes salmon with lemon, butter, and capers. We were in need of a switch-up. This looked amazing and tasted the same! I would recommend making a lot less of the salt-sugar mixture, based on the amount of fish you are cooking.

recipe: easy and quick pasta

This is my favorite pasta dish to make on lazy Sunday afternoons or uneventful nights.

Pasta Recipe:
Ingredients
about two cups of pasta (I used gluten free pasta)
a few stalks of fresh basil
2 teaspoons of hot pepper flakes
2 tablespoons of olive oil (or more, if necessary)
salt and pepper (optional)
parmesan (optional)

Directions
Boil pasta for instructed amount of time.
While pasta is cooking, chop basil into medium-sized pieces.
Once pasta is boiled, begin heating (medium) a cast-iron skillet with olive oil.
Place pasta, basil, and red pepper flakes in pan, once olive oil is sizzling.
Cook, stirring occasionally, until basil darkens.
Serve hot, with parmesan.

week of 2.16.14

H&M Pumps- I really have been loving H&M lately, weirdly though. I found these super easy heels for $25 and was even blister-free the whole night I wore them!

The Art of Simple Food- I got this for my birthday a while ago but I never really gave it a chance. That's mostly because I have a weird thing about cookbooks without a lot of pictures. But I do love Alice Waters so I opened it up recently, only to find that I wanted to start cooking immediately. It's filled with- you guessed it- simple recipes that you're sure to use on a regular basis.

Into The Gloss- There are very few blogs I check daily, but this quickly became one of them. I love the unusual photography and beauty tips you would never think of!

Mac Lipstick in Diva- I was somehow craving intensely dark lipstick recently, so I popped into the Mac store. The shopkeepers assisted in helping me apply colors (I had a few in mind like: Film Noir, Diva, Cyber, and Paramount) and finding lip liners to maintain a polished look.

The Body Shop Pink Grapefruit Scrub- I honestly dislike the scent of grapefruit so much, but that doesn't stop me from using this amazing scrub! My skin feels like it's never felt before and I'm pretty sure The Body Shop is responsible.

Pie (image via)- I've known about Four and Twenty Blackbirds for a while but after my mom insisted that's what she wanted in lieu of a cake, I knew I had to give it a try. I called the day before to order and the pie was ready before 9 the next morning. We naturally had a breakfast of pie. The black bottom oat is amazing but I'm eager to try the salted caramel apple and malted chocolate pecan. (Also, Happy Birthday, Mom!)

love your food: oatmeal

{ 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 }
When I first tried oatmeal, I couldn't stand it. This is probably because I bought a box of sugar-loaded packets that grossed me out for years. But recently I tried super simple oatmeal and I've been eating it every morning since I started. I was mainly inspired by the beautiful breakfast images I see on Instagram all the time (see above images).
Another reason I love oatmeal is because it's tailored to me. When I start to eat something for breakfast, I eat it for months on end without switching it up until I get sick of it (cheerios and an apple, smoothie, toast and a banana). But with oatmeal, I can have diversity without a hassle. But I do have a specific recipe I like to make most mornings.

Favorites Oatmeal Recipe:
Ingredients
1 cup quick oats
desired amount of boiled water (I don't like too much, I go for a slightly-wet, cookie dough consistency)
1 tablespoon brown sugar
 a dash of cinnamon
1 apple, cut into slices or cubes
1 tablespoon of peanut butter

Directions
Boil about a cup of water in a tea kettle. Prepare rest of ingredients.
Measure out quick oats into a cereal bowl.
Cut apple into desired shape, avoiding the core.
Once water is finished boiling, pour into oats, stir
Stir in cinnamon and brown sugar
Top with peanut butter and apples

week of 2.9.14

J. Crew Factory Gigi Pants- I bought these desiring some cute black pants but they've turned into a winter staple. Not only are they the perfect material (stretchy and formfitting like leggings but super thick), but they're also warm for these intense snow storms.

Sense & Sensibility- I've been making my way through all Jane Austen's books. I'm half way done and I just started reading Sense & Sensibility.

Snow Style- I honestly can't remember the last time I wore anything other than leggings and sweaters. That's why I can't get over how these amazing people are able to trek in the snow and do it so fabulously! I love checking out the Sartorialist to get out of my midwinter style rut.

Laura Mercier Lipgloss in Quartz- I talked about this in my January Favorites video, but I just have to reinforce it's wonder. I'm never one for lipgloss- I think they all look the same and just aren't as fun as lipstick. But I've been wearing this color so much due to it's high pigmentation and perfect dark, wintery shade.

Essie Polish in Fishnet Stockings- Nothing is more appropriate for Valentine's Day that a deep, intense red. I've had this color for a while but I pulled it out especially as a base coat to place pink hearts on top of.

Macarons- Though I didn't head uptown to Laduree, I did get some lovely macaroons as my Valentine's Day sweet. Bonus: they're gluten-free!
